10 Questions with Brenda Anderson
Brenda Anderson’s fiction has appeared in places like Andromeda Spaceways, A cappella Zoo, Punchnel’s, Penumbra and defenestration. She lives in Adelaide, South Australia.
How long have you been writing and what got you started?
Writing fiction since 1980 or so, when I switched from writing to friends (no-one writes letters J).
What is the best piece of advice you have for new writers?
Don’t give up. If you get stuck, try writing something new.
Are there any writing resources, such as books or websites, you’d like to recommend?
I found an online writing workshop, but seriously – any group of writers meeting for encouragement and critique.
What is your favorite type of fiction and who are your favorite authors?
I read across literature, adult and children’s fantasy, some science fiction and thrillers.
What tips do you have for finding time to write?
If the author wants to write, he/she’ll find the time.
Do you prefer to outline a story in advance or write on the fly? Why?
No hard and fast rules. Some story ideas have endings, others work themselves out in the writing.
How do you deal with rejections?
I file them, note any comments and write something else. Returning to a rejected story some time later often gives me a fresh perspective –the story is easier to rewrite.
What are your writing goals for the next twelve months?
I have a few target markets I’d love to be published in. Working on that goal.
