Bush to Sign Mexico Border Fence Bill

I'll believe it when I see it, but if we continue to throw Border Patrol Agents in prison for doing their jobs then it really doesn't matter whether a fence exists or not.

The Killers 'offended' by Green Day

Cool. I'll have to buy that new Killers CD.

Brandon Flowers has criticised Green Day for what he sees as their calculated anti-Americanism. In particular, Flowers singled out the track 'American Idiot' and the fact they filmed their DVD 'Bullet In A Bible', which features the song, in the UK.

The Awesomest Thing Ever!

I opened up my closet today and found a VHS full of Pink Floyd videos that I didn't know I had. Weird ones too, like an awesome cartoon video for "Welcome to the Machine" and the 'Stuff all that...' version of "Not Now John." I also found videos to stuff like "The Fletcher Memorial Home", "Brain Damage/Eclipse" and a pretty good historical documentary on the band.

I'm so sick of these remakes. Now Rob Zombie is going to ruin the legacy of Halloween.

I run races sometimes

I did a four mile race in my hometown yesterday and ended up with a medal (15th) and a 34 minute finish. It's down from the last couple of times I ran it, but there's some improvement from last month's 5k race.

Now I'm going to take a break from running and get back into lifting for a few months.

Okay, one more Phelps video

And in this one they use kids! So, so disturbing. But if that one doesn't ruin your weekend, try this one.

I ask again... what is the matter with these people?

Roger Waters tour

I saw Roger Waters live in Chicago this weekend. It was a great show so here are some thoughts.

First off, his presentation was great. It was a fairly simple stage show but there was some fun stuff too. The big screen with all of the video graphics and whatnot was the centerpiece. They also brought out the floating pig for "Sheep." Waters wore a black suit, played base, and didn't really do anything to make himself overshadow the music (no speeches or anything stupid like that.) I thought Nick Mason was supposed to be there, but he wasn't.

I have to say that this show was better than Pink Floyd in 1994. Waters captures the Floyd feel a lot better than Gilmour. This show also had a lot more songs from the Pink Floyd glory years than Gilmour's Floyd. The '94 tour played Momentary Lapse and Division Bell almost in their entirety, which makes sense, but the classic stuff is still better than anything on those two albums. Waters also played hardly any of his solo songs and instead went for more of a “greatest hits of Pink Floyd” set.

That and we had great seats.

There were a couple of strange things, for example he played "Southampton Dock" but not "The Final Cut." For you guys out there who have never listened to The Final Cut album, that's just like playing "The Happiest Days of our Lives" but not "Another Brick in the Wall part 2." Also I really wish he would have ended the show with "The Tide is Turning," but he didn't play any songs from Radio K.A.O.S. There was also the politics stuff, but I'll get to that later. He pulled out the awesome by opening with "In the Flesh." That's the "period" version, not the "question mark" version. If you know The Wall, you'll understand what that means and why it’s not only cool, but also very surprising. Here's what I can remember from the play list. If I left anything out, it’s because of the insane amount of alcohol I consumed before and during the show.

In The Flesh. (The Wall)
Mother (The Wall)
Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun (Atom Heart Mother)
Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Parts 1-5 (Wish You Were Here)
Have a Cigar (Wish You Were Here)
Wish You Were Here (Wish You Were Here)
Southampton Dock (The Final Cut)
The Fletcher Memorial (The Final Cut)
Perfect Sense, Part 1 (Amused to Death)
Perfect Sense, Part 2 (Amused to Death)
Leaving Beirut (unreleased)
Sheep (Animals)

Dark Side of the Moon

Encore

The Happiest Days of our Lives
Another Brick in the Wall, part 2
Comfortably Numb

As for the politics, anyone who reads Drudge was prepared for the worst. It wasn't anywhere near what Drudge reported it would be. For example, during "The Fletcher Memorial" they show burnt pictures of Bush, Blair, Saddam, Bin Laden, etc. and people complained that he was showing pictures of Bush with dictators and murderers. Well, if you put the song in context, it is from The Final Cut which an album about a nuclear holocaust. What we were seeing was the remains of the world (symbolized by the various leaders) in ruins. No big deal.

The song, "Leaving Beirut" did openly question Bush in the lyrics. Annoying? Yes. But I'm not going to hold it against him here simply because Waters has name-dropped currently elected politicians in just about every CD he's worked on since 1977. It's not partisan politics per se; he's just mad that the western leaders aren't creating whatever social utopia he thinks we should live in. He spent the late 70's and early 80's criticizing communism, so it’s not just some left-wing thing he’s doing.

But I’m not going to let him off completely. The floating pig did have the phrase ‘Impeach Bush’ painted on its behind, which was totally uncalled for and an unnecessary way to alienate some of the fans in attendance. Even in Chicago, there had to be at least of couple of Republicans.

Finally, if he really wants to make a fortune, he should get back together with Gilmour and do a Pink Floyd: The Wall “30-year-anniversary tour” in a couple of years.

Until then, go see him if you get the chance.
